Detailed sheet

petrified wood

This is a fossilized wood dating back 200 million years, all parts of a trunk or branches have been silicified, that is to say that the organic components have been gradually replaced by silica in the form of jasper, chalcedony, or more rarely opal, there are no organic parts left , all living matter has been replaced by stone : we find the growth rings, the cell walls or worm holes.
Its characteristics are those of the mineral which pseudomorphs the wood : silica. This is what we call a “petrified wood” in the common language.
