Detailed sheet

hiddenite

This is a green variety, colored by chromium, of spodumene which is part of the pyroxene group, although green spodumene without chromium are also called Hiddenite.
Its name honors W. E. Hidden, who discovered it in 1879 in the U.S. (Alexander County, North Carolina United States). By no means its name comes from the place called Hidden, but instead is true the opposite: Hidden took this name because of the discovery Hiddenite by Mr Hidden !
It is also called “triphane” when it is colorless or yellow while purplish pink spodumene is called kunzite, the name Hiddenite is reserved for green spodumene.

use in jewelry

To make jewelry, it is carved or faceted in levels but given its pleochroism, the table must be perpendicular to the main axis of the crystal to enhance its color. Its very easy cleavage makes the cut of large stones difficult.
Many green spodumene called “Hiddenite” lose their color nder the light: they are kunzites, heated to turn them green, who lose their artificial green, to light, in a few days as they do not contain chromium which gives them a stable green color. Nevertheless some heated kunzites retain their green color.
