DIn an area where foreigners are not admitted, at the east of Iran, nearby the town of Nishapur, for four Centuries the most beautiful turquoises in the world are being extracted.
Men at the village of Firuze excavate the mountain from father to son. A very firm auction sale is organized every month at the pithead of the mine to sell their product. Turquoises thus bought supply a true artisan industry at the Holy City of Mashad; in their bazaars, jewelers manufacture in quantities the jewels which the prophet advises for each Moslem man; besides, to wear a silver ring decorated with a turquoise prevents the evil eye.
The road of the turquoise began long ago; the treasures of Susa and Persépolis contained many jewels decorated with the blue stone, but it is specially at the treasure of the MELLI Bank in Teheran, one of the largest world treasures, that the Shahs of Perse accumulated extraordinary jewels enchased with turquoises.
