Epidote

>> Group(s) : silicates
See the pictures :

Its name comes from the Greek "epidosis" for generous, that lives largely, referring to its crystalline form, which is a juxtaposition of numerous slender prisms. Its former name, pistachite, was referring to its color.
There are several varieties:
The variety clinozoisite, is a dimorph of zoisite of very light green, iron-poor, with a birefringence of 0.010, we find some in Minerbio (Corsica), Zermatt (Switzerland).
The variety piemontite, red, opaque, rich in manganese, a native of Piedmont (Italy), but found also at the Ile of Groix (Morbihan). This is what gives the color of the red porphyry of Egypt.
The variety tawmawite, emerald green, with a high dichroism emerald green and yellow, containing chromium, originally from Burma (Tawmaw).
The unakite is a rock containing epidote (see unakite)
